City Elections

The Texas State Legislature passed House Bill 305 on June 14, 2019 and becomes effective on September 1, 2019.  The bill requires that a political subdivision, with the authority to impose a tax that at any time on or after January 1, 2019, maintained a publicly accessible Internet website, shall include certain information, including information regarding upcoming elections, on that website pursuant to the effective date.

REQUIREMENTS FOR FILING FOR CANDIDACY:

Each member of the City Council shall be a resident of the City of Hidalgo, a qualified voter of the State of Texas, shall have been such resident citizen of the City of Hidalgo for not less than six (6) months immediately preceding the election and shall not be indebted to the City of Hidalgo at the time of office engagement.

FILING DATES AND TIMES:

January 19 – FIRST DAY for filing applications for place on general election ballot; first day for write-in candidate to sub declaration

February 18 – LAST DAY for filing application for place on ballot for election; must be received in City Secretary’s office by 5:00 p.m.

February 22 – Last day for filing as a write-in candidate in election

ELECTION CALENDAR:

January 1 – FIRST DAY to apply for ballot by mail

January 19 – FIRST DAY for filing applications for place on general election ballot; first day for write-in candidate to submit declaration

February 18 – LAST DAY for filing application for place on ballot for election; must be received in City Secretary’s office by 5:00 p.m.

February 22 – Last Day for filing as write-in candidate in election

April 7 – Last day to Register to Vote

April 25 – First day for early voting by personal appearance.

May 3 – Last day for early voting by personal appearance.

May 7 – Election Day
